Why is UV protection important for your eyes?
The eyes are particularly sensitive to UV radiation. Short duration exposure can lead to conditions called photokeratitis or conjunctivitis; more commonly known as “welder’s flash”, “snowblindess”, and “pink eye”. The symptoms of these conditions can vary from severe pain, blurred vision, gritty, foreign body sensation and light sensitivity. Extended exposure can lead to cataracts and macular degeneration, both of which can lead to blindness.
Children need even more eye protection than adults as they tend to spend more time outdoors than most adults. In fact, more than half of a person’s lifetime exposure to UV radiation occurs by age 18. Children are much more susceptible to retinal damage because their lens is much clearer than adults; thus, enabling UV rays to penetrate deeper into the eye.
You should always wear sunglasses even in the shade, because surrounding buildings, roadways and surfaces can reflect UV rays. Sunglasses are also very important in the winter! Fresh snow can reflect 80% of UV rays nearly doubling your overall exposure to UV radiation.
