Dr. McLaughlin Answers Your Eyecare Questions
Do I need to wear sunglasses even in the winter months?
The sun can cause short term damage like a sunburnt eye (photokeratitis) or long-term damage such as cataract, age-related macular degeneration, or even cancer, but with dropping temperatures and increasing cloud cover, the last thing many people think about is reaching for their sunglasses. However, it is important to protect your eyes from UVA and UVB rays all year-round! The sun’s rays reflect off the snow which increases their intensity!Do you like to downhill ski or snowboard? UV radiation increase approximately 4% with every 300m of elevation gain and those rays are just as strong on cloudy days!
Don’t forget about the kids! A child’s eyes are even more sensitive to sun overexposure than an adult’s so make sure your little ones are sporting sunglasses when they are outside enjoying winter too!Make sure you look for quality sunglasses or goggles with 100% UVA and UVB stickers!
